Question of the Week - Electrical Safety

As part of our unit on light and electricity, students heard about electrical safety from one of our local linemen, who works for South Carolina Electric and Gas.

The question this week is: What did you learn about electrical safety that you could pass on to someone else? You only need to hightlight one thing.

In the presentation I learned the black cover on the power lines will not protect your body from being shocked. You should never touch a powerline.

Electricity (from the Greek word ἤλεκτρον, (elektron), meaning amber, and finally from New Latin ēlectricus, "amber-like") is a general term that encompasses a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge. These include many easily recognizable phenomena such as lightning and static electricity, but in addition, less familiar concepts such as the electromagnetic field and electromagnetic induction.

Although we didn't hear the talk from the South Carolina Lineman (wasn't that a Glen Campbell Song) we learnt about electricity in class this week because Mr Webb has his Plasma Ball up and running... we really should post some pictures of that online... did you have a Q and A session with the lineman? Will that be a post?

I learned that you should never play or touch electrical wires. You don't play with them because you don't know if they are alive or not.

I learned that if a wire falls on the car you have to chose weather you want to stay in the car or jump with your feet together. And that is what you need to know if a wire did fall on you car. I really loved that presentation.
