Earth Hour in Mrs. Heaton's Class

Students are going to be asked to participate in Earth Hour this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. when people all around the world turn off their lights for one hour to raise awareness of the impact of our choices on global warming.

We invite all followers and visitors to our blog to participate and report back what you did for the one hour when all the lights went out.

As always I love your post. My students and I are enjoying the blog challenge09. I am hoping this will help us stay in touch over the summer. How about you?

Thanks for finding other videos that were not from YouTube. It is a pity so many schools have this blocked - we need to teach and expect students to use technology wisely rather than filter everything for them.

Yikes...sadly these videos are YouTube ones (the YouTube sign is blocked when I embedded for some reason). Until recently our district had blocked it but now have released the restriction on teacher logins only so I can show relevant videos on YouTube to the class (we have seen composting videos and others through YouTube).

Wow! I think the "Lights Out" idea is great. Because it's a good idea to do a whole hour of no lights, because there's a whole lot of other things to do than watch TV, and at then at the same time you're conserving energy! We looked at the "Lights Out" article in Time for Kids this week. Do you read Time For Kids? Have fun with "Lights Out!"

We love the blog challenge as well. We've created a couple of videos related to our Reduce, Recycling and Reuse Blogging Challenge #4 and posted them on our class page but on seeing this we need to work out something to publicise Earth Hour.

Earth Hour was last night and I had been hoping to walk our dog around the neighborhood and visit with families we know. Unfortunately it was pouring down with rain and neither my husband or dog was willing to make the trek outside. We turned off all the lights and debated if Earth Hour meant tv and computers too. Of course I said yes but my teenage son couldn't find anything on line about it so he ruled it was just lights. With that lawyer like debate taken care of I read a book with my battery operated light, my husband watched tv, and my son played a game on the internet. Hoping for better weather next year, that way it will be easier to get everyone out of the house! What did you do?

I forgot to do earth hour. I was at Chick-fil-a rockband night. I am very upset I could not do it. Hayden

What a great challenge for your students. I love hearing about what students are doing for help protect our earth.

For Earth Hour, I made sure every light was turned off in my house. I even unplugged a few things. My boyfriend and I went for a walk around our neighborhood.
