Life in a Bubble - Animoto

This is an animoto of the bubble station at our Read-A-Million-Minutes carnival that was held just before spring break.

This idea was from Roper Mountain Science Institute in Greenville, SC and came out of a book titled "Bubble Festival".

To make your own bubble station all you need is a wading pool (I bought mine from Maxway for $13), 2cinder blocks (my husband borrowed from work), a hula hoop that you cover with 100% cotton string (that takes awhile - I did it in front of the tv and then gave it to a couple of my students to finish in class when they were done their work), and the bubble solution.

The bubble solution was just 3 bottles of yellow Joy dish detergent, 2 boxes of corn starch, 12 tablespoons of baking powder (not soda), and four buckets of water (5 gallon buckets). We mixed these all together on site.

It does get tiring putting people in bubbles (good leg workout) so get plenty of volunteers and teach students to do it.

It was a huge hit at our carnival!

Forgot to add...it is not an easy activity to do when the wind picks up! It can be done inside if you put absorbent cloth underneath the pool.

What a neat idea! It looks like everyone had a lot of fun with it! I wish I could have made it over to try but I was also having fun sliming students on the Slime Slide. Thank you Mrs. Heaton and all your volunteers for having such an awesome game at our carnival!

Thank you for sharing this with your viewers, I hadn't thought that something like this would have been possible, but I can see the possibilities the next time that we have a fundraiser here. Wonderful idea, and thanks for the warning about the wind! Something you wouldn't necessairly instantly consider.

Awesome bubble video and what a great idea. Thanks for the recipe we might try it at camp in September. Never seen it before. Did anyone get wet!

We have some comments for you:

Alex says: That looks like a lot of fun. If it pops will it sting your eyes?

Jake says: I would like to try that some day!

We all say: very cool!!! Thank you for sharing!

In response to some of the questions -

Did anyone get wet? Not really. Maybe a light sprinkle when the bubble popped but not a huge amount. I kept towels on hand for the volunteers to dry off their hands but nobody needed it. If you see people soaking. or in bathing suits, that was because of some other carnival games were going on a that same time that had lots of water.

If it pops will it sting your eyes? Nobody complained or told me if it did. I was one of the people doing the bubble making and I managed to get quite a lot in my eye and it irrated it briefly but not for long.

I'm glad people enjoyed it! It was easy to set up (harder to find storage for everything afterward - it is current pushed under my porch at home :)
